How to learn English with Netflix

Watching shows in English really works, as long as you understand enough to follow and you stop at the right moments. Here is how.

Why TV shows work

You acquire a language by understanding messages, the idea of “comprehensible input” made popular by linguist Stephen Krashen. A series gives you hours of natural English, with the picture to help you guess the meaning. The trap: understand too little and you give up; read everything in your language and you stop listening.

1. Pick a show slightly below your level

Start with everyday shows with clear dialogue: sitcoms, workplace series, reality TV. Keep technical thrillers and strong accents for later. Rewatching a show you already know in your own language is a great trick: you know the story, so all your attention goes to the language.

2. Show English and your language together

English-only subtitles are often too hard at first, and subtitles in your language stop you from learning. Dual subtitles solve both: you read the English and glance at your language only when you get stuck. Kinoglot also adds the translation of hard words in parentheses, right inside the English sentence, based on your level.

3. Stop on lines, not on every word

Don’t pause for every unknown word. Stop when a line matters or keeps coming back, replay it with the actor’s voice, slow it down if needed, then carry on. This is what trains your ear to catch words in fast speech.

4. Keep the useful words

Save the words you hear several times or actually need, with the sentence you saw them in. A word in context sticks far better than a word in a list.

5. Move to English-only step by step

When you understand most lines, blur your language and only reveal it when needed. Then raise your level so fewer words are translated. The goal: one episode in English with less and less help.
