Privacy policy
Last updated 2026-10-24. In short: no account, no tracking, no ads. Your data stays in your browser.
Who we are
Kinoglot is a browser extension that shows dual subtitles on Netflix and YouTube to help you learn a language. Data controller: YSLeap, the publisher of Kinoglot (a private individual). Questions: YSLeap@proton.me.
What stays on your device
This data is kept only in your browser’s local storage:
- your settings (language, level, display);
- the words you save, with the sentence, the video title and address, and the moment you saw them;
- the words you mark as known;
- a cache of translations already fetched.
Kinoglot has no server and never receives this data: we cannot read it or sell it. It stays until you delete it or uninstall the extension. Note: uninstalling the extension erases your words. Back them up from the popup first if you want to keep them. The translation cache is limited to the last 5,000 words.
What leaves your device
To show translations, Kinoglot first tries your browser’s built-in translator, which runs on your device. Otherwise it sends only the subtitle text and the words to translate, directly from your browser, to an online translation service. It tries them in this order and moves to the next one when a service does not answer:
- Google Translate (translate.googleapis.com and clients5.google.com), Google LLC, United States:privacy policy;
- Microsoft Bing Translator (www.bing.com), Microsoft Corporation, United States:privacy statement;
- MyMemory (api.mymemory.translated.net), Translated srl, Italy:privacy policy.
No identifier, history or account information is added. Like any web request, the service that answers sees your IP address.
When the platform already provides subtitles in your language (Netflix, or YouTube’s automatic translation), Kinoglot uses them and sends nothing to a translation service for that line.
Pronunciation uses your browser’s speech synthesis. Depending on your browser and voice, some online voices send the spoken word to the browser vendor’s speech service (for example Google or Microsoft).
Legal basis and transfer outside the EU
Sending the text to translate is necessary to provide the service you ask for (performance of the service, GDPR article 6(1)(b)). Each translation service acts as an independent controller for the requests it receives and applies its own retention periods. Google LLC and Microsoft Corporation are based in the United States; the transfer relies on the EU–US Data Privacy Framework, which both participate in. Translated srl (MyMemory) is based in the European Union. Requests are sent without cookies or referrer, so they cannot be linked to your Google or Microsoft accounts.
What Kinoglot reads on pages
On Netflix and YouTube only, Kinoglot reads the subtitle tracks of the video you are watching and controls the player (pause, rewind, speed) when you ask it to. It does not read your other tabs, your history or your credentials.
Permissions
- Storage: keep your settings and words on your device.
- netflix.com and youtube.com: show subtitles in the player.
- translate.googleapis.com, clients5.google.com, www.bing.com and api.mymemory.translated.net: translate subtitles and words (one service takes over when another does not answer).
- Active tab: when you open the popup, check whether the open video needs a reload.
What we don’t do
- No analytics, no cookies, no advertising.
- No selling or sharing of data.
- No knowing collection of data from children under 15.
Your rights
You have the rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, objection and portability. Everything is on your device, so you exercise them directly: view or delete a word from the popup, export your words (CSV or JSON), or uninstall the extension to erase everything. For any GDPR question, write to the address above. You can also lodge a complaint with your data protection authority (in France, the CNIL).
The Kinoglot website
The website sets no cookies and uses no analytics. Its host (Cloudflare) keeps technical logs (IP address, requested page, date) for security and operation, under its own retention periods.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top is updated. A future paid plan (sync, AI explanations) will come with an update before it launches.
