TOEIC listening practice with TV series

Half of the TOEIC Listening and Reading test is listening. TV series are ideal practice if you use them with a method.

What the listening section tests

The listening section lasts about 45 minutes: photos, question–response, conversations and short talks, nearly always in a work setting such as meetings, deliveries, bookings, invoices and schedules. You need to follow English at normal speed with American, British, Canadian and Australian accents.

Pick shows about work

Office, legal and medical series are full of test vocabulary: invoice, deadline, postpone, schedule, shipment, reimburse. Mix countries of production to hear several accents.

A 30-minute routine

  1. 10 minutes of active listening. Blur your language and follow with English only.
  2. 10 minutes on the lines you missed. Replay them with the actor’s voice, slow them to 0.75x, then back to normal speed.
  3. 10 minutes of vocabulary. Save the work words you heard, with the sentence from the scene.

Train your ear for fast speech

In speech, going to becomes “gonna”, want to becomes “wanna”, and words run together. That is where many candidates lose track. Looping a single line is the most effective way to get used to it.
